In the series of notable men associated with Ayurveda, Sushruta finds his place high up on the ladder.According to Mahabharata, Sushruta is regarded as the son of Rishi Vishwamitra. Sushruta`s timeline is considered to be in between 600 B.C. to 1000 B.C., the time when he taught and practised his art of surgery in the city of Varanasi.

#1. The Father of Plastic Surgery
Sushruta is regarded as the father of plastic surgery because of his contributions towards ancient Indian medicine and it`s advancement.

His teachings related to anatomy, pathophysiology and therapeutic strategies have been given utmost importance in the field of medicine, especially his work related to nasal reconstruction.

#2 Salya Tantra
Salya Tantra, the ancient surgical science and modern plastic surgery have much in common.
Much thanks to Sushruta, for defining the principles of surgery in his ancient teachings given in his notable work  Sushruta Samhita.

#3 Sushruta Samhita
Sushruta Samhita is regarded as one of the foundational texts in the field of Ayurveda, it consists of three volumes and 184 chapters.
Also, these 184 chapters have descriptions related to 1,120 illnesses and 700 medicinal plants.

#4 School for All


Sushruta’s school welcomed members of the all the four castes, including the Shudras. However, they were restricted from participating in several special ceremonies which were reserved for the students of other castes.

The concept of licensing which came in the modern world, later on, was suggested by Sushruta in Sushruta Samhita where he also stated the ideal qualities of a nurse according to him.
