Rauvolfia Serpentina in Latin, also known as Indian Snakeroot and Devil Pepper in English is a flower belonging to Apocynaceae family. It is known as Sarpagandha in Sanskrit.
Sarpagandha grows in shady forests in India in the sub-Himalayan tracts up to a range of 1000 meters and it also grows in the lower ranges of Eastern and Western Ghats and also in the Andaman Island.
Interesting Fact: Sarpagandha is also known as Chota Chand in hindi.
Sarpagandha or Chota Chand is also grows in other Indian states namely Bihar, Bengal, Goa and Uttar Pradesh. It grows also in Burma (now Myanmar), Sri Lanka and in Java.
Java is an Indonesian island. Chota Chand is now considered an endangered plant.
Sarpadandha is known as Indian Snakeroot because traditionally it has been used as antidote for stings and bites of poisonous reptiles and insects in India and Nepal. Sarpagandha is a medicinal herb which has been used by legendary men like Alexander the Great and Mahatama Gandhi.
Alexander the Great used it cure himself of the poison from an arrow and the great mahatma used Sarpgandha throughout his lifetime as a tranquilizer. A Tranquilizer is a drug used for treatment of tension, fear, anxiety and agitation. It is used especially for reduce the state of anxiety and tension.
Sarpadgandha is rich in Reserpine, found in the roots of the plant. Reserpine is an antipsychotic, antihypertensive and indole alkaloid drug. Alkaloids are compounds which contain mostly nitrogen atoms. Antipsychotics are those drugs which are used majorly to manage psychosis including delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and disordered thought and are beneficial in the treatment of Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder.
In earlier days, the roots of Sarpagandha were brewed as tea and used to treat hypertension, insanity, snakebite and cholera. The chief use of Chota Chand has been as a sedative and a hypnotic. Sedatives are substances or compounds which potentially reduce excitement, reduce irritability and induce calm and sleep.
