SMB Story

“Hailing from a low-income family of halwais, Ashok Gupta’s early life was not easy. He started working at the age of 12, doing odd jobs to make ends meet. By the age of 20, he had started working full-time in an ayurvedic company called Dindayal Aushadhi in Gwalior as a distributor. Being a firm believer in Ayurveda, he read a lot about ayurvedic recipes and acquired an understanding of the ayurvedic lifestyle. In the early 90s, he joined another company called Chirayu Pharmaceuticals and worked there for more than a decade distributing ayurvedic medicines to retailers and doctors in Gwalior and surrounding areas.  Over time, he built a strong network with the manufacturers and other brands. At the same time, he also observed the lack of quality in these products, which disturbed him.”

Indian Retailer

Agnim Gupta, Principal – Tech & Growth, Amrutam, maintains, “The healthcare and nutrition Industry in India is at its peak currently, and in my understanding, it is going to see an upward trend in the years to come. In recent times, preventive care has taken a front seat with more focus being placed on building immunity. Ayurveda has always been a way of living in an Indian household with ‘Nani/ Dadi ke Nushke’ helping, preventing, and treating minor disorders like loose motion, constipation, headache, etc. before allopathy took over. But with the adoption of yoga and Ayurveda by the west, and the rebranded version of it gaining popularity in India, the younger generation has started turning their attention to Ayurveda. With more people moving towards organic products, not shying away from paying a little more for quality goods, and having a better understanding of health, Ayurveda may end up as the first choice for not just beauty or personal care but preventive health (health care) as well for a large percent of the population.””

“The brand claims all its items are handmade, and no machines are used during the production process to maintain product purity. But the quality procedures do not end here. Aware of the doubts of vigilant consumers who often complain against exaggerated claims, the brand has gotten its products certified by the Ministry of AYUSH (a regulatory authority in charge of quality control when it comes to ayurvedic products). The ministry has also certified the company’s manufacturing processes. Further, the brand also claims to adhere to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)’s cruelty free norms and is completely vegan. At present, Amrutam has 133 SKUs across three categories — skincare, haircare and health supplements — and prices vary between INR 60 and INR 2,000.”
