Rediscovering Ayurveda is Amrutam’s series of blogs which will include various men and women and their ideas about Ayurveda. Even though, India is the birthplace of Ayurveda, with passing time it has lost its original importance as a school of life amongst Indians and many a time have been limited to be referred as a school of medicine. Ayurveda is surely much more than that.
So, we at Amrutam decided to go out and find what Ayurveda means to people in the present day.
This is the eleventh article in Amrutam’s series of articles called Rediscovering Ayurveda, which aims to understand the idea or perception that modern-day men and women carry about Ayurveda.
REDISCOVERING AYURVEDA WITH RAVI KANT
Ravi currently resides in Delhi and has been associated with presitigious institutes like Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Indian School of Development Management and CARE India. He is recently completed a course in Ayurveda from LBS Government Ayurvedic College.
Let’s read Ravi’s thoughts about Ayurveda in his own words.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF AYURVEDA?
“Ayurveda is the Science of life and art of living. It is not just a treatment/ therapy system but a way of healthy living. It is knowledge of origin and evolution of life and it’s sustainability since it gives philosophy and science of life and way to maintain harmony between elements to live a healthy life. This is why Ayurveda is a holistic system which focuses on three pillars, Aushadhi (medicine), Aahar (food) and Vihaar (lifestyle) as a line of treatment as well the way of healthy living. I have personally experienced that Ayurvedic medicines give the best result when accompanied by changed lifestyle. It entails prevention and cure at the same time.”
For Ravi, Ayurveda is more than a system of medicine or therapy system, it is a way of living- healthy living.
WHAT ARE YOUR TWO FAVORITE HEALTHY HABITS?
Ravi has a simple two point formula to stay healthy which includes no junk food and proper sleep.
“I eat healthy according to season (no junk food and occasional snacks) and maintain sound sleep to stay healthy.”
HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY WITH AYURVEDA BEGIN?
Ayurveda as a way of living entered Ravi’s life accidentally and has fascinated him ever since he was first introduced to it.
“My introduction to Ayurveda was an accident. I prepared for pre-medical tests to become a medical doctor (MBBS) but scored less and allotted seat for Ayurvedic medicine. My first interaction to Ayurveda happened in Ayurvedic college where I learned Basic Principles of Ayurveda and realized its potential.”
HOW DO YOU THINK AWARENESS REGARDING AYURVEDA CAN BE INCREASED?
“Ayurveda is often blamed for not being scientific and having lack of evidence. Bringing forward stories of change through Ayurveda and sharing beautiful experiences are key to spread awareness about Ayurveda. A number of people using Ayurveda for therapeutic as well routine purposes are enormous but their experiences and effect of the use of Ayurveda (medicines and other products) are not documented which leads to the ambiguous scope of Ayurveda. The market has great potential to play a key role to resurrect Ayurveda and establish it as an evidence-based system of medicine and healthy living.”
WHAT IS YOUR DAILY HEALTH ROUTINE?
Ravi has ensured to inculcate the habit of waking up early and including the six rasas in his meals. Let’s read about his health routine in his own words.
“I try to follow Dincharya as much as possible as described by Ayurveda. Starting from waking up at morning and going for a walk, drinking water after waking up and eating only after clearing the bowel, having breakfast, lunch and dinner in a fixed time range and including six rasas in food and sleeping every night in a fixed time range must before midnight and taking minimum 6 hour sleep is the routine I follow.”
WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE FOR ALL AYURVEDA, SPIRITUAL, YOGA AND HEALTHY LIVING ENTHUSIASTS?
Ravi has a message for all of you which will leave you thinking and contemplating about your lifestyle for a long time.
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking when we created them.”- Einstein.
